From 26 to 29 January 2020, Tajikistan joins over 120 countries from all over the world at the world’s leading trade fair for the sports business Internationale Fachmesse für Sportartikel und Sportmode (ISPO) in Munich, Germany, where more than 2,800 international exhibitors will present their latest products to around 85,000 visitors. Five sportswear producers from Tajikistan, namely “Gulistoni Dushanbe”, “Leader”, “Rahimov A.A.”, “Sapsan”, and “Vahdat” will explore the latest and most innovative sports equipment, shoes, and fashion, as well as the most recent trends in outdoor sports, health &fitness and other segments from world-renowned brands.
ISPO Munich is a B2B trade fair and is considered to be the most important industry event for professionals in the sports business. ISPO Munich is thus an ideal platform for establishing contacts and setting up global business deals, with every ninth exhibitor coming from outside of Germany – from countries such as the United States, Italy, the United Kingdom and China. Currently, some Tajik sportswear producers work with famous sports brands, such as Lotto, Umbro, as well as with retail chains, e.g. “Decathlon”, through intermediaries and suppliers. As the next step, the companies plan to directly approach top sportswear brands and diversify their customer base. Participation in the ISPO trade fair can thus be one of the platforms for establishing first business contacts with sports brands.
While the Russian Federation is the main market for the Tajik sportswear producers, the International Trade Centre (ITC) supports the Tajik companies to diversify their export markets, to improve the quality of their products to meet foreign market requirements and customers demand, to increase the export volume, and thus to create more stable jobs in the country. Tajik exports of sportswear are double its imports – while the country imported sports clothing items for less than USD 800,000 in 2017, according to the latest official data available, the Tajik companies exported sportswear for around $ 1.5 million.
The production capacity of the Tajik sportswear producers allows them to supply the internal market and strengthen their presence in the regional markets. According to the ITC-supported “Study on Apparel Market of Tajikistan”, published on 31 July 2019, the total volume of the sportswear market in Tajikistan is USD 15.6 million per year, and sportswear accounted for 6.5% of the total volume of the apparel market in Tajikistan in 2017. Gym suits, sport breeches, and T-shirts are estimated to account for about 90% of the total sportswear market.
Preparation for and participation in the ISPO Munich is made possible thanks to the Government of Switzerland through ITC’s Global Textiles and Clothing Programme and in close cooperation with the project of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in Tajikistan “Towards Rural Inclusive Growth and Economic Resilience” (TRIGGER II), which is implemented on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The delegation of five Tajik producers will be guided throughout the fair by representatives of ITC local partner consulting companies – “ACT Development Group” and “Business Consulting Group”. ITC believes that participation in international trade fairs provides good opportunities for project beneficiary companies to be competitive in regional markets through the establishment of new business contacts, obtaining information on new modern machinery, and learning more about global market requirements.
